Digital Marketing Internship with Animal Rescue Center in Cape Town

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Embark on a Nonprofit Digital Marketing Internship in Cape Town

If you have a passion for animals, and you’re keen to get practical work experience in marketing and fundraising, here’s a wonderful opportunity to join an animal welfare organization in Cape Town, South Africa, for an internship. You’ll find yourself professionally stimulated, rewarded by doing impactful work, and – not unimportantly – surrounded by puppies.

You’ll be based on the Southern Peninsula, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet and beaches are plentiful. In this wonderful setting, you’ll join a hard-working team of people who’ve made saving the lives of dogs and cats their daily business.

As an intern, you’ll enjoy a varied work environment. Most of your tasks will be focused on marketing (think website management and digital campaigns), but you can also expect to assist with fundraising, which can include donor management, fundraising events, and research. This digital marketing internship will give you a great resume boost, a rewarding experience, and a unique insight into the day to day running of a nonprofit organization.

ORGANIZATION

TEARS is a well-established nonprofit organization on a mission to improve the lives of animals in the South African communities they work in. The country deals with a high number of stray animals, an equally high number of neglected pets, and an unfortunate amount of animal abuse. It’s an animal welfare tragedy that is dwarfed by the many socio-economic and humanitarian issues South Africa faces, and therefore largely overlooked.

Based on the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town, the TEARS team provides quality shelter, medical care, and rescue support to animals in need in surrounding communities. They rescue and home hundreds of dogs and cats each year, run sterilization drives, offer free veterinary care, and proactively address animal abuse through education campaigns.

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

You’ll stay at a comfortable and welcoming volunteer house in a picturesque suburb of Cape Town, on the Southern Peninsula. It’s a great setting; you’ll be surrounded by beaches and mountains, and the penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach is only a 5-minute drive away. The house hosts people from around the world that are volunteering in the surrounding communities, which creates a wonderfully international vibe. The nearest shops and restaurants are a 5-minute drive away, and Cape Town’s city center is a 40-minute drive away. It’s easy to take Ubers and make your way around.

Safety & Support

Safety & Support

Be sure to prioritize hydration in the summer to avoid heatstroke. South Africa does have high crime rates, so it’s important to be aware and use common sense to stay safe. Some safety guidelines are to always walk in groups, take a taxi/Uber in the evenings, know safe/dangerous areas, secure your belongings, don’t walk around with large sums of cash (you can pay everything with a card), minimize wearing flashy accessories, and be cautious of overly friendly strangers.

Communication

Communication

The accommodation offers free Wi-Fi to keep family and friends up to date via WhatsApp, Zoom, etc. Cafes/restaurants also offer free Wi-Fi. You can also consider getting a local SIM card if your phone is unlocked, or setting your phone’s status to roaming, depending on your provider’s rates.

Meals

Meals

A simple breakfast and a delicious cooked dinner (vegetarian & vegan options available) from Monday to Friday are included in your fee. Indulge in local dishes, like bobotie and South African Braai! For desserts, don’t miss out on milk tarts and malva pudding. There is a diverse food scene in Cape Town, so no matter your cuisine preference or dietary restrictions you’ll have plenty of options. Let us know in advance if you have any allergies/dietary needs.
