Why Choose Roots Internships in NGO Management

Find out from our previous interns how internship positions in NGO Management can boost your professional career and grow your interpersonal skills.

I do not have a single bad thing to say about my internship in Zambia. Anyone who is interested in NGO management or the general behind-the-scenes of running an NGO would benefit greatly from doing a management internship with Free Haven. From admin tasks, to social media, to teaching – I got to try and experience everything. The biggest thing I learned during my internship was the overall work it takes to run an NGO. The pressure of fundraising and looking after so many students rests on so few shoulders and the way in which the team handles this is incredible. I think overall this taught me about resilience and the importance of not giving up, even if a cumulation of bad or challenging news comes all at once.

Caroline, University of Exeter, German – NGO Management Internship, Zambia

Going into this internship I had no idea what to expect and what the outcome might be. I hoped it would help me find and solidify what I want to do as a career but also expose me to many different opportunities and open new doors for places to explore around the world. Now that I am reflecting on my time in Zambia, I am cherishing everything we were able to accomplish, create, learn, and grow together during this time. Don’t get me wrong, we had long and hard days working, but the short taxi ride home and getting to look out the window at Livingstone and Zambia always made the hard work so much more bearable. Knowing that the work we do can make even the smallest impact on someone, and that impact can help change their life in a positive way then I know at the end of the day everything was worth it. I know I will take everything I have learned into the future with me as I move forward and will always remember how I was able to find my passion and a new home across the world. I am forever grateful.

Katie, Northeastern University, American – Sustainable Development Internship, Zambia

Despite working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I learned many new things and was especially pleased about the practical application of many aspects I had been taught in courses. I gained valuable insights into many different aspects of work, including data collection, monitoring, cooperation with other projects, communications, fundraising, etc. I learned a lot about the realities of running an NGO and can often use the skills and abilities I gained at university to fulfill my tasks. While I would have preferred to travel to Malawi, I did manage to gain in-depth insight into the way an NGO works and what the particular challenges in this particular case are.
