Fundraising and Digital Marketing Internship in the Philippines

Help raise awareness and funds for an organization uplifting impoverished communities through education and youth empowerment

This is an exciting opportunity to build a versatile skill set in digital marketing and fundraising while helping to make a positive difference in children’s lives.

You’ll join an organization based in Tacloban City dedicated to alleviating poverty in the city by providing quality education to disadvantaged communities. They run a range of classes and clubs designed to equip children with both the education and life skills they need to get ahead in life. With a long history of impactful work, they have a strong presence among local communities and are well-connected with schools and education initiatives throughout the city.

Your role as an intern will help to document the organization’s work and impact on the community and promote it across various marketing and communication channels. This will provide you fantastic learning opportunities in a range of digital marketing strategies, while learning the fundamentals of fundraising and donor relations.

ORGANIZATION

This inspiring organization is dedicated to empowering and uplifting indigent communities in Tacloban City through educational support. Founded in 2004, the organization provides a range of educational programs, courses, and football clubs from their own study center and children’s park where they help upwards of 200 children each year. Their aim is to not only support academic progression but provide vocational training and teach life skills giving children the tools they need to build a brighter future.

The organization is well-established in Tacloban partnering with and supporting schools and community-led initiatives throughout the city. They also arrange school supplies and transportation helping children to attend school. Having worked in the city for two decades, and supporting communities’ through the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, they are well-integrated and have a proven track record of forging nurturing relationships with young minds.

TASKS & REQUIreMENTS

You’ll spend your days actively gathering content ideas at the organization’s study center and then taking initiative in creating various marketing and fundraising materials. You’ll gain first hand exposure into donor relationship management, devise and execute fundraising campaigns, and build a varied portfolio of marketing content.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute digital marketing strategies to increase awareness, engagement, and support for Streetlight’s mission and programs.
  • Help manage and maintain social media platforms (Facebook & Instagram) to promote fundraising campaigns, share impactful stories, and engage with followers.
  • Create and curate compelling content, including images, videos, blog posts, and infographics, to showcase the impact of Streetlight’s work and inspire action from supporters.
  • Lead the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns, including online giving days, peer-to-peer fundraising initiatives, and special events, to meet revenue targets and fundraising goals.
  • Help develop and implement a sponsor program to attract corporate sponsors and partners, cultivate relationships, and secure sponsorships for events, programs, and initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors and supporters, providing personalized communication, acknowledgment, and stewardship to cultivate long-term engagement and support.
  • Collaborate with the development team to create compelling fundraising appeals, donor appeals, and impact reports that highlight the outcomes and achievements of Streetlight’s programs and initiatives.
  • Analyze and report on key performance metrics, including website traffic, social media engagement, email open rates, and donation metrics, to evaluate the effectiveness of digital marketing and fundraising efforts.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends, best practices, and innovations in digital marketing, social media, and fundraising, and apply insights to continuously improve strategies and tactics.
  • All interns are required to spend time out of the office and engaging in safe play activities with the children throughout the day. It’s more than just desk work, it’s play time!

Requirements

  • Strong interest and ideally experience in fundraising and digital marketing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication (English or Norwegian)
  • Good with children and eager to work with them during breaks
  • Cultural competency and relationship building
  • Foundational computer skills and willingness to learn new software and tools
  • Business-minded and entrepreneurial
  • MUST have prior international travel experience or join the internship with a friend

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Interns will stay at the organization’s own volunteer residence on-site the project. They accommodation includes a fully furnished open air shared room with fans, shared bathrooms, and access to a fully-equipped shared kitchen to cook meals. The house also has six cats freely-roaming through it, so it’s great for animal lovers.

Tacloban is a relatively safe city but interns should exercise basic precautions like concealing their valuables and avoiding walking alone at night. The organization’s complex has its own security team, as well as 9 guard dogs (Belgian Malinois). Interns must also follow recommended medical precautions with TB, Hepatitis A, and dengue being prevalent in the area during the rainy season. General mosquito precautions should be taken, including wearing insect repellent and long, loose clothing in the evenings.

Interns will work from the organization’s study center with computers suites, workspaces, and strong Wifi. Alternatively, as a hub of business and commerce in the Eastern Visayas region the city has a strong infrastructure with solid internet connection and plenty of restaurants, cafes, and hotels with free Wifi. It is recommended to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected with family and friends at any time.

Interns will be provided lunch and dinner daily cooked by a chef on-site. These meals will consist of local Filipino food, but certain Western meals can be prepared upon request. For breakfast and snacks, they’ll have access to the fully-equipped kitchen at the accommodation.

So you’ll absolutely be able to travel during your internship in the Philippines! Each island in the archipelago is unique, so hop on a boat or quick flight to get exploring. Be sure to ask your host organization for recommendations and must-sees.

Does my internship in the Philippines qualify for university credits?

It sure does! However, you’ll want to double check with your supervisor that your university approves the program. We can also assist you in purchasing transfer credits to add onto your internship experience.

Will I receive compensation during my internship abroad?

Unfortunately, no. When interning for a nonprofit organization, the placement will be unpaid, but there are different ways to fund your internship. Don’t forget, the wealth of knowledge and opportunities for both your professional and personal growth will be invaluable!
