Take advantage of this opportunity to get a glimpse into the medical field in an international context. With this Medical Internship spanning a range of settings, you’ll be gaining a first-hand look into the day-to-day of medical professionals in a Kenyan community.
You’ll be assisting in a variety of health facilities, which provide unique learning environments with different patient needs and demographics. This allows you to apply your academic knowledge and background experience to a range of settings, each teaching different lessons. You’ll receive well-rounded insight into what it takes to work in medicine and be inspired by the dedicated individuals working in the industry.
This Medical Internship is a practical work experience that will allow you to learn from local health professionals and to support a number of health centers, nursing homes, and hospitals. It’s a rewarding opportunity to get exposure in the medical field, in the context of a developing country. You won’t be treating patients independently, as you’ll always be guided by qualified medical staff and to qualify for this internship, you’ll need to have a medical qualification or be enrolled in a medical degree at university. The exact nature of your work during this internship can be adapted to the level of your degree and experience.
ORGANIZATION
As a Medical intern on this program, you’ll have the opportunity to work – alongside local professionals – in a number of health institutes. They include;
- Three hospitals that offer antenatal services, basic emergency obstetric care, comprehensive emergency obstetric care, curative in-patient and outpatient services, family planning, immunization, growth monitoring & promotion, HIV counseling and testing and TB diagnosis and clinic, dental services, maternal child health and family planning, and laboratory services.
- A community health initiative that offers home-based medical support to less advantaged community members. Their support includes emergency care, as well as health education; they ensure patients understand their medical problems and empower them to take an active role in their health, nutrition and preventive measures.
- A nonprofit care home that supports girls living with physical, mental, sensory,
and intellectual disabilities. - A children’s home that caters to neglected and abandoned children.
- A private in-house care facility for patients with Dementia and Alzheimers.
TASKS & REQUIreMENTS
Your role as a Medical intern will be somewhat customized, depending on your academic and practical experience. But either way, you’ll fill a supportive role, working alongside and learning from Kenyan medical providers. Your tasks may include the following;
Responsibilities
- Perform intake & triage services and medical screening
- Perform basic medical procedures, such as wound dressings
- Assist with patient rounds
- Observe surgical procedures
- Assist with community outreach initiatives and help provide basic medical services and education
- Help provide residential care such as physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs
- Assist with engagement and educational programs for children
Requirements
- Have completed a medical or healthcare degree, or be enrolled in a relevant program
- A passion for providing healthcare to disadvantaged communities
- Have empathy and good communication skills
- A flexible attitude and an ability to adapt to other cultures
- Practical experience in the medical field is a plus
- Bring your own scrubs
WHERE YOU’LL STAY
You’ll stay at Brackenhurst, a lodge and conference center in a lovely natural setting, just 20 kilometers from Nairobi. The lodge has a restaurant, several communal spaces, a TV room, Wifi access, and several outdoor activities available. You’ll stay in comfortable shared rooms during this medical internship. From Monday to Friday, a chef will prepare meals for you, and on weekends, you’ll have the option of cooking for yourself or eating out.

Limuru is a quiet suburb of Nairobi that is surrounded by nature and not considered a tourist hotspot. Being a foreigner may draw attention to you, so be careful with your valuables and be aware of your surroundings when out and about. If heading to Nairobi, be especially vigilant as pickpocketing and bag snatching can occur. It’s also best to avoid walking alone at night.

There is an in-house chef at Brackenhurst from Monday to Friday who prepares meals. On weekends, interns are free to prepare food of choice for themselves using the supplies available in the house or alternatively eat at the restaurant on-site. Most dietary requirements can be catered for, but please communicate these prior to your arrival.

The town of Limuru, located in central Kenya, is a welcoming community that thrives off its agriculture. Home to lush tea plantations, the region offers cool weather and green scenery. There are plenty of chances to enjoy the fresh air, with a plethora of hikes and highlands to explore. You can also pop over to Nairobi for a thriving urban and nightlife scene, or head to Nairobi National Park, various national museums, other wildlife and conservation experiences, or the conservation areas along the Kenyan coast.

- An academic internship eligible for university credit. Check with your university to confirm if this internship qualifies for credit or alternatively we can assist you with purchasing transfer credits.

- Work equipment will be provided. It is not necessary to bring medical supplies or equipment, but you will need to bring your own scrubs. NB. You may choose to bring in medical donations which will go to the various partners you will work with. Reach out for details on what is needed.

- Visa and medical/travel insurance costs for the duration of your placement – must include cover for repatriation
- Meals on weekends, drinks, snacks, and items of personal nature (f.e. curios, gifts, clothing)

Regrettably, internships with nonprofit organizations are unpaid; however, there are various avenues to secure funding for your internship.
