Weather and Climate
Uganda’s diverse weather is mild and pleasant in the highlands, and warm in the lowlands, with two rainy seasons. The wet season spans from March to May, and the dry season, from June to September and December. Mbarara specifically, experiences a tropical rainforest climate with a distinct change in the seasons. Average temperatures range from 17°C (63°F) to 26°C (79°F) across the year. Visitors can enjoy lush green landscapes during the wet season and pleasant conditions for outdoor activities in the dry season.
Safety and Support
Throughout your internship in Uganda we’re here to support you. Uganda is mostly safe for travelers. Interns will have to exercise caution though. Mbarara is generally considered safe for travel, but like any destination, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings, follow local advice, and avoid walking alone at night. We’ll help you stay updated on current travel advisories. Our host organization will offer advice on respecting local customs. As with any travel, having common-sense safety measures in place will help you to have a positive and secure experience in Mbarara.
Uganda Travel Requirements
- Visa – If your internship is shorter than 3 months, the most convenient choice is the tourist visa which can be easily acquired online. For 3 and 6 months, we recommend the volunteer visa (Class G1). Extending this visa for longer stays is also relatively straightforward.
- Travel Insurance – You want to have a carefree experience during your internship in Uganda, so it’s important to get the right travel insurance; a package that is suited for your upcoming trip. Check out our page with more information on flights and insurance.
- Police Clearance / Background Check – This is a standard policy for most of our internships, as you are often working with vulnerable individuals. The procedure on how to obtain a police clearance/background check varies per country.
- Vaccinations – We always recommend seeking professional medical advice for vaccinations but the generally recommended vaccinations for Uganda are: Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis, Tetanus, and Yellow Fever. You may also want to ask about Hepatitis B, Meningococcal Meningitis, Rabies, and Typhoid.

The country has a central location and well-connected transportation networks. Uganda shares borders with several Eastern African countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This proximity allows for convenient road trips, bus journeys, and even flights to neighboring countries. Local meals cost around $2 and day trips range between $10-50 depending on the activity. Keep in mind, accommodations costs and a one month food package are included in the fees, so you don’t have to budget for that!
