What a wonderful time to be a part of the journey. I strongly believe that more and more interns working with Projekt Ubuntu could be the next level to even greater accomplishments. The outcome of how brilliant this experience can be, results in how much engagement you put into it. With a large amount of freedom to see what you can create, whether it be a documentary, blog writing, social media content, or fundraising events, you can let this project be the canvas of your creativity. The intent of this nonprofit internship is that you are here to support, stand as a good representation, be a contributor, prove to yourself what you are capable of, and lastly; to listen to the message of Ubuntu and discover your interpretation of it!

A unique experience I was lucky to have! I’m very glad I stumbled upon Roots Interns 6 months ago. It has truly been a unique opportunity! At first, I was a little nervous as I’d never done a remote internship or worked with people from so far away in Africa, but stepping out of my comfort zone was exactly what I needed. I got the chance to work on social media posts (content editing and managing channels), a social media diary, fundraising/giving campaigns, and formatting & visualizing documents. After completing my internship I feel more confident in any potential global experience that will come my way. Everyone I’ve worked with from Roots and MSPC has been wonderful, and I’m grateful for having this eye-opening experience.
During my internship, I was responsible for the program communications, developing a project management system, blog posts, and newsletters. It’s a small organization so I was able to be involved in a lot of things and take some responsibility. Shortly after I started, they launched their new program, ‘Fynbos for the Future’ where they plant Fynbos gardens in outdoor classrooms at schools in Cape Town. I was part of the school selection process and set up the ten school profiles for the website. When we had the first planting day at one of the schools, it was amazing to see all the hard work that the team put into this program pay off.

How will a digital marketing internship further my career?
You’ll have the opportunity to build and expand your expertise in dynamic global settings. Within this context, your role will be vital for the pursuit of social and economic development in local communities, where your knowledge can change lives for the better. This experience will provide you with confidence and a strong skill set to tackle future challenges that will arise in your career.
International work experience, especially in the nonprofit sector, looks incredible on a resume. Employers worldwide seek to find individuals who have diverse and original experiences, which makes your internship abroad the advantage you need to stand out. On top of that, assisting a do-good organization is extremely enriching for your personal development. You deserve to feel confident and self-sufficient; what better way to improve your self-esteem than by helping others do the same?
Should I join my internship in-person or remotely?
There are a few things you must consider before deciding to travel or work from home. In some cases, internships can be strictly online or require going on-site. As for programs that are flexible about the modality, what must be considered is your own personal preference.
Being on-site allows you to experience the project in its full bloom; befriending the locals, visiting attractions, and broadening your knowledge of the location’s multiculturalism and unique history. However, remote communications internships give you the chance to work from the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule which is also worth bearing in mind. As long as you are able to give your absolute best, the modality you choose for your internship isn’t an issue.
