Why Choose Roots’ Internships in Gender Equality
Find out from our previous interns how internship positions in women’s empowerment can boost your professional career and grow your interpersonal skills.
I worked on a variety of things during my remote internship. I helped with the implementation of the Kwanele App guiding victims to report GBV in South Africa, drafted a handbook for people who responded to the helpline to support survivors, assisted with legal consultation, and summarized clients’ cases. Together with the social media team, we launched the Know Your Rights Campaign to make the law accessible to everyone. And finally, I also looked for and updated grant opportunities for social enterprise or innovation.
Rujia, Harvard University, Chinese – Law Internship, South Africa
I had a wonderful time working with Roots and my placement organization. I was walking through the interview process and enjoyed how well-heard I was. My interests, schedule, and goals were taken into account at every turn. I felt supported during my stay and the accommodations were very nice. One of the best parts about this internship was how flexible it was. In the beginning, this was a bit of a challenge but once you find your rhythm and goals, it’s the best. I did everything from working one-on-one with a few of the kids from the school, facilitating girl power group, facilitating lesson plans with teachers, helping create a business plan, mission and vision statement, and so much more. Each day was new and different, a real adventure. My whole experience was so pleasant that I decided to come back after my internship and I’ll be staying here for the rest of the year! My life has been changed for the better because of this experience.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my internship with Kwanele and I am extremely grateful for the opportunities it has given me and the range of skills that I have learned. As the marketing intern, each day is exciting and different and it has been highly rewarding to see the impact of my work as we continue to grow on social media. Though my internship has drawn to a close, I will be continuing to work for Kwanele part-time during my final year of university. Thank you to Roots for helping me find the internship that best suited my goals and skill set, and to Leonora, my supervisor and founder of Kwanele, who has been incredibly supportive and amazing to work with!
